I can't say what speed it will be but I hope it's a good one :).

I was "talking" to a friend of mine over chat today about windows(windoze) verses linux. He is a die hard windows user and can't help it really... I asked him if he'd ever tried linux and he said he used it once for about two hours.

Lately I've been dual booting on an install of windoze that we have and Linux. The Reason for using windoze is simply for chatting and viewing webcam. However, whenever I tried working on something on wondows, I would run in to roadblocks all the time. I couldn't just ssh in to my server and unzip things and un tar them no.... I would have to download the files FIRST and then I would have to unzip/untar them and THEN I would have to upload them and make sure they worked. And if they didn't, well tough luck, you've gotta download them again, edit and reupload. talk about a hassle!

I'm told that you can download special programs to run linux commands under windoze but they ofcourse don't run as fast :). You can download many programs for windows that will give you compatability, but it really takes too much hassle! Almost everything for windows isn't free, and it all takes up more memory than necesary just because of the fact that it is windoze.

I have not tried Windows Vista out as of yet and I can only hope the Microsoft has shaped up and really made something out of windows... I doubt it but I can always hope for it :). But even then, Windows Vista is FAR from free. take a look at the prices for Vista, even their basic version is a days wage! don't even speak of the pro version :). Mac would have to be the better alternative if you intend to pay that much, they cost about the same anyways! might as well... they're more stable :).

So anyways, after using both for a few days, I have really decided that Windows is for kids(playing games and chatting) and Linux is for working Grownups :). The simple features such as webcam and voice and stuff, windows has, but the advanced commands which increase productivity, are in Linux.

thankyou.

WINE

Wine Is Not an Emulator...
Rather strange Acronym for a pretty great piece of software! I've been playing around with wine lately and it seems like a pretty great thing. I can run IE(internet exploder(explorer...)) and also Opera and firefox pretty well which makes it so much easier to watch those little flash videos lately! Adobe doesn't seem to care about their linux users, which is really sad...

Anyways, I found this great place called Franks Corner which I think is one of the WINE developers site... anyways, it has a bunch of programs that are known to actually work under wine. Many Programs work under wine but it's not perfect. Oftimes it's unstable and a lot of things don't work. They've done pretty good though for what they've got!

I hear windows is actually switching to the linux base... maybe, well they didn't actually say that they were switching to the linux base but were going to make windows and linux more cross-compatable. So, maybe not really the linux base. Probably the windoze base with linux cammands. how... wonderfully terrible. But maybe after a few years windows will finally get it straight and switch to the linux base. Mac has been doing very well since they've done that! Many people have been buying Macs lately because they're known for their great stability. I'd use Mac more often but, they aren't open source and that hinders from the most usage. If they were more open source, it'd be great :D.

well... Now, the reasion I was using her computer was not necesarily because I couldn't use any of the other computers but, because her computer is far more comfortable due to having all my locations all ready in my opera. So, my sister still likes to use her computer so she complained that I need to find another computer to use.

So, what did I do? I(with the help of my brother) got another computer set up with X11 forewarding and simply ssh'd in and typed in "opera" and wa la! I'm using the same opera I'm used to :).

Now, tell me you can do that with wondows! I don't know if you can but, I really doubt it's that easy :). How do you enable X11 forewarding? well, in ubuntu it's rather simple. you simply su to root. cd over to /etc/ssh/ and type "nano ssh_config". Then, once you're inside there's a part just down there called "host *" and all you do is change the "#Foreward X11 no" to "Foreward X11 yes"(remove # sign) and do the same for X11 tRusted :). Then it should work great! Oh yeah, in Nano you'll have to do ctrl+O and ctrl+X to exit :).

And That Should do it!

Have Fun :)

surfing for stuff

I've been trying to install a version of ubuntu on a system of mine but, I haven't been able to get it installed... The live CD apears to be burning wrong or something because, it doesn't get past a certain point. I think I may have ruined a dvdrw drive too... maybe, still have to look at it though. Anyways, aside from that, Yesterday I decided to go looking around for some other linux distros to see if there was any other ones out there that might work well... I found another blogspot blog here and it seemed to have some good posts... I had done a google search so it brought me to this post which seemed to have some good info(even though it was pretty old).

So, I'd recomend checking out that blog for some of the latest updates... I'm thinking I may actually try "linux from scratch" but I may not, depending on what I feel like :). well, I'll see you all later!

Merry Christmas!

Hi all!
Linux has been interesting lately... I've been playing around with a system we have and
trying to install kubuntu on it... I'm not really sure what the deal with this comp is, but it's not cooperating! There's a version of debian on it from before hand so, not too bad! the mirrors are messed up though and, on debian that practicly a must(ubuntu is built on debian so it's included ;))... So, I found a mirror set somewhere out there... uhh *finds link* here! It's got some good info on what to do when that happens :). Though, since I did it, it still has a few bugs, but what doesn't? :P

Anyhow, I'm thinking on learning python, that should be interesting! Lots of prgrammers know python and it seems like it must be purty useful but supposedly it's purty easy too ;). I'll tell ya what it's like once I get done! ok, signing off.

Welcome yo Linux.

Please back up your windows files and put them in vmware!
Hi, In my family, we use a variety. My two brothers use Gentoo and Slackware, My Dad
uses mandriva along with me sister. I'm getting used to ubuntu. Windows has turned in to the old clunker
for me. It's quite slow really!

Linux runs much faster and smoother than windows, who cares really if you can't run cool games without W.I.N.E.? If you can run your system at 10X the speed, it doesn't really matter! Linux is becomming more and more popular and really is the best out there.

Mac OS is now based on BSD linux and it runs great! Definately more stable than windows. Linux is the wave of the future, and it's a good wave! It's well worht the trouble to learn it because you can run at least 10X more apps than with windoze.

Ok, that's my speel for now. I made this blog to kindof journal my "linux journey", I'm in the process of learning all about it. Hopefully, I'll be able to share some ideas, and also get some hints from my readers. well seey'all later!
